BHP Announces Nuclear Power Plant for Olympic Dam

BHP's Olympic Dam

BHP has wasted no time in responding to SA Treasurer and Energy Minister, Tom Koutsantonis’ suggestion that it should build its own power station for its massive Olympic dam mine.

CEO Andrew Mackenzie has announced that BHP will build a nuclear plant nearby, fuelled by its own uranium.

It will be designed to meet the full need of this complex integrated processing facility.

Mackenzie said that nuclear power was the future for Australia’s energy needs.

It is understood that plans are well advanced to build a second nuclear plant on French Island, in Victoria, to replace the base load power lost by the closure of Hazelwood.

If only this were true!

Affordable, reliable energy is essential for our prosperity.

We would be unwise to rely on governments to fulfil this need.
